Drilling Operations(6)-Drill String Damage

During drilling, the drill string is subjected to the action of alternating load for a long time in the mud, then it will break . Most drilling tools are damaged in the following ways:1、most of the drill pipe damage occurs in the drilling rotation or lifting from the bottom of the hole , even if it is the case of a slip break,it will lead to failure when fatigue crack has developed to a certain.
2、Most of the drill pipe damage occurs within 1.2m of the joint
3、The damage of drill pipe is often related to the serious corrosion mark on the inner surface of drill pipe
4、Damage to the surface of the drill pipe is usually related to the original scar on the surface of the drill pipe.
5、Because of the thickness of the drill collar body, the failure of drill collar usually occurs at the thread joint
Fatigue failure is inevitable as the drill string undergoes cycles of tensile, compressive, torsional, and bending stresses throughout the well. Fatigue failure is divided into three forms: pure fatigue, scar fatigue and corrosion fatigue.
Among them, the scarring fatigue damage is caused by the scarring on the surface of drill string. Bite marks and bruises from chain tongs; Impression mark; Adequate groove caused by rubber protector; Arc burn; Indentation caused by ground and underground metal chipping.
